Abcam Announces Winner of 15 Discoveries Contest

  • Contest celebrates scientific breakthroughs with $15,000 research grant

Cambridge UK, February 3, 2013: Abcam plc., a global leader in the supply of innovative protein research tools, today announced Yali Huang as the winner of its 15 discoveries contest. Ms. Huang conducts her work at the Early Embryo Development lab at the MRC Centre of Regenerative Medicine, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The contest recognises the most innovative and exciting scientific breakthroughs of the last 18 months supported by Abcam products.

In recognition of her winning entry, Ms. Huang’s lab will receive a $15,000 lab research grant and $1,000 worth of Abcam products. Her project, titled ‘In Vivo Differentiation Potential of Epiblast Stem Cells Revealed by Chimeric Embryo Formation’, was selected from over 80 global submissions by an expert panel of scientists. Illustrating the importance of the host environment on Chimera formation, the research contributes to a greater understanding of how cultured stem cells relate to the early embryo.

Abcam to open office in Shanghai, China

  • New office will provide dedicated support to Chinese customers

Cambridge UK, January 21, 2014: Abcam plc., a global leader in the supply of innovative protein research tools, has announced that it will open a new office in February 2014, in Shanghai, China. The new hub is the Company’s ninth global office, and has been established to support Abcam’s focus on increasing geographic reach and improving distribution channels to rapidly growing markets. Located in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Pudong New District, a prominent economic growth and innovation area, the office is within close proximity of the City and Abcam’s production facility in Hangzhou, which develops pioneering research tools such as RabMAb®, its proprietary rabbit monoclonal antibody technology.

The office will house customer and technical support functions, provided by native Mandarin speakers, as well as a product warehouse, which will facilitate local stock storage for the first time. This means that customers will benefit from improved delivery times, with the large majority of orders arriving at their door within 24 hours. The proximity of the office will also enable Abcam to support customers with more specific needs through its extensive range of products and services, including custom antibody production.

Abcam Introduces Alexa Fluor Secondary Antibodies

  • New range offers increased choice for multi-colour staining
Alexa® product launchCambridge, UK, November 04 2013: Abcam Plc., a leading provider of protein research tools and services, announced today that it has added new Alexa Fluor® 405/568/750 conjugated secondary antibodies to its existing Alexa Fluor® 488/555/594/647 conjugates. Extensively tested in Abcam’s labs, the Alexa Fluor® range guarantees bright staining and low background. The different color variants were selected to provide an increased selection for multi-color staining.

The Alexa Fluor® portfolio comprises antibodies raised against mouse/rabbit/rat/chicken /goat /sheep/guinea-pig IgG and against mouse/rabbit IgM. It also includes a large selection of pre-adsorbed/cross-adsorbed and F(ab’)2 fragment secondaries to ensure low species cross-reactivity. A dilution range of 1/200 -1/1000 in IF/ICC allows for at least 250 stainings* per product to improve cost efficiency.

“The Alexa® range expansion adds a blue emitting fluorophore, Alexa Fluor® 405, and a near IR dye, Alexa Fluor® 750. Abcam appoints Alan Hirzel as Chief Marketing Officer

This is a new position, based at Abcam’s Headquarters in Cambridge, UK, which will strengthen Abcam’s management team and support the company in delivering its growth strategies.

Alan will take responsibility for Abcam’s branding, product portfolio and online consumer offering. He joins Abcam on 5th August 2013.

Alan has over 20 years of global business and leadership experience. Prior to joining Abcam, he spent 14 years with leading management consultant Bain & Company, most recently serving as head of the UK Healthcare Practice and head of its London office operations. Whilst at Bain, Alan advised a wide range of global brand executives on consumer and marketing strategies to help achieve growth targets.

Alan serves as a Trustee at The Social Business Trust, and has recently been appointed to the board of UK National Citizen Service. Alan has a B.S. in Plant Molecular Biology and M.S. from Cornell University, and an MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Business at Cornell.

Abcam Welcomes Students from Cambridge Regional College

  • BTEC Science Diploma students take part in a series of talks and practical demonstrations at Abcam’s lab in Cambridge, UK.

Abcam Plc., a producer and distributor of high quality protein research tools, welcomed a group of students studying for the BTEC Science Diploma at Cambridge Regional College to take part in a series of activities at its Cambridge headquarters on Tuesday 26th March. The visit was designed to give the students some experience of what it is like to work in a busy, successful working laboratory.

The students enjoyed a series of educational, scientific talks from Sarah Bolt, Head of Characterisation Services, and Wyn Forrest-Owen, Head of Production Sciences, during which they learned about the production of Abcam’s products, and how scientists use the reagents in their research. Abcam’s Resourcing Advisor, Claire Warburton, also gave the students some practical tips on writing a CV and applying for jobs in the science industry. The visit finished with a tour of the laboratory where the production and testing of some of Abcam’s products takes place.

Abcam Welcomes Students from Cambridge Regional College

Claire Sellick, Biology Lecturer at Cambridge Regional College, said: “The visit has been really inspirational for our students and has helped them better understand the day-to-day running of a lab at a successful biotech company. We’re grateful to Abcam for taking the time to support and encourage our students with their studies.”

Wyn Forrest-Owen, Head of Production Sciences said: “We hope that we’ve been able to excite the next generation of scientists about their future careers in the industry. Abcam donates an additional £45,000 to local charities

  • Cambridge, UK based Red Balloon, Winter Comfort, and Cambridge Community Foundation, to benefit

Cambridge, UK, March 18, 2013: Abcam Plc, producer and distributor of high quality protein research tools, today announced its support for local good causes by donating an additional £45,000 to three local charities (£15,000 each). The three charities are: Red Balloon, a charity to support the recovery of bullied children; Winter Comfort, a social initiative to help the homeless; and Cambridge Community Foundation, a local charity working to connect a range of donors to local good causes.

“Supporting our community is really important to Abcam. We’ve been incredibly fortunate over the years and are now really pleased to be able to now give something back, providing support at what is a critical point for some of these charities. We look forward to helping other good causes in the future,” commented Jonathan Milner, CEO, Abcam.

Abcam donates to Red Balloon

Jacob Gray from Abcam’s Charity Committee presents a £15,000 cheque to Carrie Herbert, Chief Executive of Red Balloon.

Abcam also regularly donates to a range of national and international causes through its Charity Committee. The Committee, which consists of Abcam employees, has been administrating funding to charities since 2004.

Rachel Newell, Social Enterprise and Business Development Manager, Wintercomfort, said: “We would like to thank Abcam for their donation. We’re looking at developing new initiatives that will give those that that are homeless or vulnerably housed the skills to help them get back into employment and this money will help support any current and future projects.”

Jane Darlington, CEO of Cambridge Community Foundation, said: “We are delighted to welcome Abcam as the latest member of our Community Foundation 100 initiative. Through this initiative we are bringing 100 local companies and people together to collectively support local voluntary and community groups that are working hard to improve the quality of life across the communities of Cambridgeshire.”
