Nick Skinner, SVP of HR at Abcam, explains to ‘The Medicine Maker’ how the transition to flexible working, initiated by Abcam in 2017, was instrumental in rapidly adapting to working during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the current context, flexible working seems to be the ‘new normal’ for many employees and organizations worldwide. However, flexible working policies were not mainstream before the COVID-19 era, and the benefits of their adoption were not widely recognized. In 2017, Abcam embarked on a journey to understand the impact of flexible working, particularly on gender diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
We collaborated with Eliot Sherman, Assistant Professor of Organizational Behaviour at the London Business School, to conduct a study that involved over 200 volunteers from our workforce. The results revealed huge benefits, not just for working mothers and carers but also for us all, leading to a permanent change in how we work at Abcam.
Early 2020, when the Wuhan outbreak became global, we had to react quickly. With no time wasted, we adapted and expanded our flexible working policies for all our sites, from Tokyo to Eugene. In the face of this uncertainty, agility was paramount…
